Remove
Fan from Water Pump

The picture
should help withhow to properly remove the clutch fan. It shows a fan removal
tool in use. This is available from most parts stores. Many offer a free rental
on them. The large spanner wrench grips the pulley bolts to keep the pulley
from spinning. The smaller wrench goes over the hex shaft on the fan. Once it
is loose, it should spin off by hand.
The 4.0 is
pictured. It shows a "lefty loosey" format for loosening the shaft. The 3.0
has opposite threads so it will be the reverse of this picture.
The 3.0
water pump bolts are recessed into the water pump and the removal tool will
not seat on them. You must remove the 4 10 mm bolts from the pulley, slide the
pulley forward, then reinstall the bolts. Loosen the 4 bolts with the belt
still attached. This should give you enough tension to prevent the pulley from
spinning.
To remove
the fan from the engine/engine bay, It is usually necessary to remove the
fan shroud and lift both pieces out together. On the 4.0 ther are only two bolts
attaching the shroud.

This shows
another trick for loosening the bolts on a 4.0 water pump. These are not recessed
like the 3.0 so strategically placing a screwdriver will give the leverage to
get them all loose. When installing a 3-piece pulley kit, you are better off
to loosen these bolts while the belt is still attached. Just loosen them, do
not remove them, because the belt tension is beneficial for removing a
3.0 crank pulley also.
